Choosing a Roof Box Garage Hoist: Capacity and Clearance

Compare roof-box garage hoists by lifted load, per-support limits, ceiling structure and door clearance. Includes Teal Triangle and Thule MultiLift checks.

Uninstalled hoist components and support straps arranged beside a roof box on low supports

Quick answer

Choose a garage hoist only after checking the ceiling, full supported load, box contact points and complete door/lift clearances. Compare the total and any per-support limits, then follow the exact installation and operating instructions. A larger rating does not approve an uncertain structure.

Crank-operated alternative

Thule MultiLift 572 — 572004

A ceiling lift with a 100kg published maximum lifted load. The selected Amazon title says 572000, while its model and part-number tables identify 572004; confirm the supplied generation.

The 572004 manual requires professional ceiling installation and a suitable, sufficiently strong ceiling. Check the full support arrangement, clearances, box permission and supplied instructions.

  • 100kg maximum lifted load
  • 572004 manual and part number
  • Professional installation required

Why consider it

  • Published roof-box lift arrangement
  • Distinct alternative to a rope-brake hoist
  • Manufacturer installation and use diagrams available

Keep in mind

  • Ceiling capacity is independent of the 100kg rating
  • Professional installation required by its manual
  • Do not apply these figures to MultiLift 2 or another model

Decide whether the garage can support the method

A hoist can free floor space and reduce some manual handling, but it creates a suspended load and a moving operation. Start with the ceiling construction, the box’s permitted support arrangement and the available working space, rather than choosing the product with the largest number in its title.

Identify the exact box model and empty weight, then decide what will actually be lifted. Remove luggage unless the complete approved arrangement explicitly permits otherwise. A box’s driving payload rating does not establish how it may be suspended or whether a garage ceiling can support it.

Keep the hoist model and generation clear too. The Thule 572004 example has its own instructions; a newer product called MultiLift 2 is a different system. Do not transfer capacity, mounting or clearance figures between them.

Keep product capacity and structural capacity separate

The hoist’s stated lifting limit applies under its intended installation. The ceiling and fixings must independently be suitable for the entire supported arrangement, including the hoist equipment and anything stored with the box. A numerical margin under the product limit does not resolve an uncertain joist or fixing.

For an illustrative empty box weighing 23.2kg with 1.8kg of additional lifted equipment, the lifted item total is 25kg. That arithmetic can help compare the product limit, but does not establish support balance, box permission, ceiling capacity or installation suitability. Do not use the illustration as a structural load design.

Where a system specifies separate limits for individual supports, check those as well as the total. Uneven loading can exceed one support’s rating while the combined item remains below the headline figure. The permitted support locations and operating method are therefore part of the decision, not minor details after purchase.

Compare the two hoist arrangements carefully

Teal Triangle’s Elite cargo hoist uses the specified rope, pulley and locking-brake arrangement with adjustable support straps. Its manual gives 150lb maximum total and 75lb per strap bracket. Use the exact complete instructions for operation and balance rather than treating a locking brake as permission to release or route a rope differently.

Thule’s MultiLift 572004 is a distinct ceiling-lift arrangement with a published 100kg maximum. The Amazon listing title says 572000, while its model and part-number tables identify 572004. Confirm the actual supplied unit and matching manual before relying on the figures in this comparison.

The 572004 manual requires professional ceiling installation and a prior check of the ceiling material and strength. That is a product requirement, not an optional feature to trade against a lower price. Include the installation assessment and work in the complete purchase cost.

Verify the actual ceiling and fixing instructions

The Elite manual requires suitable timber ceiling joists for its load-bearing plates. It also describes a wall cleat, whose fixing provisions are not the same as the overhead load plates. A reference to drywall anchors for the cleat must not be read as permission to suspend the box from a plasterboard ceiling.

Do not decide joist capacity from appearance alone or assume every garage has the same structure above its lining. Services, damaged timber, uncertain construction or a different substrate need competent assessment before installation. Follow all local and product requirements for the actual arrangement.

This guide does not prescribe generic screw sizes, hole depths, joist spans or alternative anchors. Obtain those decisions from the specified instructions and the person assessing the structure, rather than adapting an example from a different hoist or building.

Measure the full door sweep and lift path

Map the lowest position used to load and the highest stored position, including straps, brackets and the hoist’s own hardware. Add the space needed for the operator and the path the box takes between the car and its stored location. The car’s roof and open hatch may enter that space too.

A garage door can pass through space that appears empty when it is fully open or closed. Inspect its entire normal movement safely, including tracks, arms and the motor. Do not defeat a door safety system or allow it to contact the box to discover whether the gap is sufficient.

Budget the full hanging depth above a moving garage door

A high lifting capacity does not create overhead clearance. The bottom of the stored assembly, the entire open-door path and the access needed for lifting all need their own geometry record.

Inputs and assumptions. All geometry is hypothetical. Ceiling heights are 2.60m or 2.90m; gap from ceiling to box top 0.20m; box height 0.43m; support projection below it 0.08m; highest door-sweep point 2.10m. A third case adds 0.10m to the hanging assembly. None of these dimensions is a MultiLift specification.

Budget the full hanging depth above a moving garage door — calculated comparison, October 2026
Illustrative caseCeilingHanging depthLowest stored pointHighest door sweepVertical difference
Lower ceiling2.6m0.71m1.89m2.10m-0.21m
Higher ceiling2.9m0.71m2.19m2.10m0.09m
Higher ceiling + extra hanging depth2.9m0.81m2.09m2.10m-0.01m

The lower-ceiling case overlaps the assumed door envelope by 0.21m. Raising the ceiling by 0.30m changes that to a 0.09m numerical gap, but another 0.10m of hanging depth removes it again.

Use measurements of the fully stored assembly and complete moving-door envelope, not the hoist’s headline travel. Product support permission, individual strap/bracket limits, ceiling structure and the manufacturer’s required installation remain separate checks.

Calculation method and sources

Hanging depth = ceiling-to-box gap + box height + support projection + declared additions. Bottom height = ceiling height − hanging depth. Vertical difference = bottom height − highest door-sweep point. Negative means an overlap in the model; positive is only a geometric difference, not a prescribed safe margin.

Check the box support and loading routine

The support arrangement must suit the actual shell and keep it controlled throughout the lift. Follow the hoist and box instructions together for contact locations, adjustment and retention. Do not suspend a box from its lid, hinge, handle or bar clamps unless that exact method is expressly permitted.

Keep the operating area below the load clear as required and follow the specified sequence for raising, securing and lowering. A bulky empty shell still needs a planned landing position and controlled handling. Do not use the system for people or improvise a lifting attachment from unrelated luggage straps.

If a cover is used in storage, confirm it is compatible with the box and permitted arrangement. It must not interfere with support contact, operating parts or required inspections. A soft cover adds no structural retention.

Maintain the complete installed system

Inspect ropes, straps, pulleys, brakes, fixings and support surfaces at the intervals in the instructions. Stop use if any required component is damaged, worn or loose, and obtain the specified replacement or service advice. Do not tie around a damaged section or replace a critical component with a convenient generic part.

Reassess the layout after changing the garage door, vehicle, roof box or nearby storage. Keep the installation record and exact manual accessible. If either structure or clearance cannot be established, choose a suitable floor or wall storage method instead of forcing a ceiling installation to work.

Frequently asked questions

Does a hoist rating establish ceiling strength?

No. The hoist’s limit and the supporting structure’s capacity are separate checks. Verify the ceiling construction, fixing arrangement and complete supported load before using any suspended storage system.

Can I fit the Thule MultiLift 572004 myself?

Its manual states that ceiling fitting must be performed by a professional and the ceiling material and strength checked first. Follow that requirement for the exact supplied model rather than applying another hoist’s instructions.

Can I install the Teal Triangle ceiling plates in plasterboard?

Its manual requires the load-bearing ceiling plates to be fixed to suitable timber joists. Drywall anchors described for the wall cleat do not authorise suspending the ceiling load from plasterboard.

Is the 150lb Elite limit per strap?

No. It is the maximum total, approximately 68kg, with a separate 75lb limit per strap bracket. Both limits and all structural and support requirements must be satisfied.

How much garage-door clearance do I need?

Measure the complete door and mechanism sweep, the stored box and hoist hardware, and the operating lift path. There is no universal clearance figure that makes every door, box and hoist combination suitable.
