Roof Bars for Vehicles with Rain Gutters: Choosing the Correct System
Choose a roof-bar system for genuine rain gutters. Compare Thule 951 and 952 foot packs, required bars, roof clearance, condition checks and installation limits.
Quick answer
A gutter-mounted rack needs genuine load-bearing rain gutters, the approved foot height and compatible crossbars. The 951 and 952 examples below are four-foot packs, not complete racks. Choose from the exact vehicle fit and the instructions for the supplied revision.

Identify a genuine gutter attachment
Rain gutters are external channels at the roof edge on some older cars, utility vehicles and vans. A suitable rack grips the approved gutter structure using feet designed for that task. A shallow line in the roof panel or a plastic trim strip is not evidence of that attachment.
Use the vehicle handbook and current rack fit information to establish the roof configuration. A vehicle may have had an aftermarket roof conversion, repainting or body repairs that change the condition or geometry of the intended contact area. Resolve those details before treating an old fit listing as sufficient.
If the roof actually has concealed bolts, look at fixed-point systems. If it has rails, use the rail identification guide. Gutter feet should not be adapted to a different roof attachment.
Select the complete approved system
Find the exact vehicle, body and roof variant in the rack maker's selection information. Record the feet, bars and any additional specified pieces. If no current approved combination is shown, ask the manufacturer for an assessment of the actual vehicle and parts.
The 951000 and 952000 examples have different listed foot heights. They are choices to investigate when the vehicle fit specifies them, rather than lower and higher upgrades for every gutter-equipped car. A taller foot also changes the full carrying envelope and access to equipment.
Check the supplied package against the instruction sheet. A familiar short name such as “951” may appear in discussions of several ages of equipment. Use the complete model number, revision and actual interface when buying new parts or completing a used set.
Match the bar interface instead of buying by profile name
The linked Thule 951000/952000 sheet explicitly identifies SquareBar Evo and distinguishes 2.0mm and 3.0mm bar interfaces in its inventory and assembly diagrams. Follow the illustrated arrangement for the supplied pieces.
That does not make every bar called square compatible, nor does it approve WingBar Evo for these selected foot models. Other gutter-foot variants can have different interfaces. Confirm the complete combination instead of transferring advice from a similar-looking foot.
Keep all prescribed inserts, fastening parts and bar-end pieces. An omitted interface piece cannot be replaced with improvised packing to make the bar feel tighter.
Check clearance above the whole roof profile
The listed 15cm and 20cm foot heights are not a measurement from the highest point of every roof to the top of the completed rack. Roof curvature, raised sections and the approved foot geometry determine the actual gap.
Check both crossbars over their entire span and the full underside of the intended carrier. A box may sit above the bar while its jaws, brackets or fasteners extend below it. Include roof vents, opening panels and any approved accessory structures.
Do not select taller feet simply to clear an obstruction without confirming the vehicle fit. If the prescribed arrangement cannot provide the required clearance, change the approved equipment choice or ask for a documented alternative.
Assess the gutter condition before fitting
Inspect the intended contact areas for damage, distortion, corrosion and repairs. A gutter can appear continuous from a distance while a local section is unsuitable for a load-bearing clamp. Do not hide poor condition behind a protective pad.
If the vehicle is older, modified or has uncertain bodywork, obtain competent advice about the actual structure before loading it. A rack's model approval assumes the required vehicle attachment remains in an appropriate condition.
Clean contact surfaces according to the vehicle and rack instructions. Keep the specified protective components correctly positioned, and stop if the feet cannot seat as illustrated. Tightening harder is not a remedy for a wrong shape or damaged attachment.
Understand the load definition and the driving restrictions
Record the vehicle's dynamic roof allowance, the complete rack limit and the accessory's own limit. Include the rack and carrier weights wherever the relevant definition requires them. A foot pack's headline rating does not increase the vehicle allowance.
The selected instruction sheet identifies different foot-pack weights for 951 and 952. Add the actual approved bars and other hardware rather than assuming a foot-pack figure is the weight of an entire rack. Use the roof-load calculation guide once the full weights are established.
Check the model-specific driving limit: the linked 951000/952000 sheet shows a maximum of 80km/h, approximately 50mph. Do not borrow a higher figure from a different rack or roof-box page. The applicable instructions, any lower limits, road rules and conditions all need to be respected.
Check accessories on the completed rack
For a roof box, confirm the bar profile and the mounting hardware's permitted dimensions. For a sports carrier, check its approved square-bar attachment or required conversion kit. A T-track-only fitting cannot simply be placed around a square bar.
Then check permitted bar spacing against the carrier's range. Use the installation positions specified for the vehicle and foot system; general spacing advice does not override them. Allow access to fastening controls and check the box opening and hatch sweep.
Measure the complete fitted height before booking restricted routes or using a garage. A taller gutter system can change everyday clearance substantially even with the same roof box.
Verify locking parts and small components by revision
Check which locking arrangement the actual foot pack permits, what is included and which additional parts are required. Older photographs and accessory descriptions can show different arrangements, so match the manual and the supplied foot.
A lock is also separate from load-bearing engagement. Follow the full fastening and inspection instructions whether or not a compatible security option is fitted.
Compare the full purchase and handling routine
Add the prescribed bars, feet, required small pieces and any compatible locking components. Check the package quantities and instructions before installation, especially when buying through a marketplace or combining new and used equipment.
Consider how you will reach the box or carrier once fitted. Higher equipment can be harder to load and remove, and the complete rack needs suitable storage between uses. Assess that routine before purchasing a large shell to sit on it.
Keep the final component list, vehicle fit and instruction revision together. If the roof or carrying equipment changes, recheck the system rather than assuming the original gutter attachment covers every future use.

Frequently asked questions
Can any channel along a car roof take gutter-mounted feet?
No. A decorative seam, recessed trim channel or fixed-point cover is not necessarily a structural rain gutter. Identify the roof arrangement from vehicle documentation and obtain an exact approved rack fit.
What is the difference between Thule 951 and 952?
The selected 951000 and 952000 packs are listed with 15cm and 20cm foot heights respectively. Choose the version approved for the exact vehicle and roof; those figures are not the total height of the completed rack above the car.
Do these gutter-foot packs include crossbars?
The selected packages are foot packs. Obtain the approved crossbars separately and check the matching instruction revision, bar interface and all required inserts. Do not assume an existing aero bar is compatible.
Can I use WingBar Evo with these 951000 or 952000 feet?
The linked 951000/952000 instruction sheet identifies SquareBar Evo and shows specific bar interfaces. It does not approve WingBar Evo for these selected feet. Use a different gutter-foot variant only if its exact instructions and vehicle fit confirm that combination.
Can I follow the speed guidance from another Thule rack?
No. The linked 951000/952000 sheet shows a maximum of 80km/h, approximately 50mph. Follow the instructions supplied for the exact complete system, any lower accessory guidance, road limits and conditions.
