Low-Profile Roof Boxes: Comparing Height and Usable Space

Compare the Motion 3 XL Low with shorter lower-shell alternatives. Understand height off the bars, luggage height, hatch clearance and weight.

Quick answer

Start with Motion 3 XL Low for a purpose-designed lower profile, or compare a compact VonHaus 320L and narrow Ocean 600 if their luggage shapes suit. Measure total fitted height: a shallow shell cannot guarantee garage or barrier clearance.

The options and their limitations

Lower profile, long luggage

Thule Motion 3 XL Low

A purpose-designed lower-profile 400-litre box: Thule lists 30cm height off the crossbar. Its 89cm width and 23.2kg planning weight still need space and load allowance.

Consider for longer, lower luggage where overall height matters. The manual gives a lower interior height than the product page; measure packed bags and confirm the supplied unit.

  • 400 litres · 216 × 89 × 36cm (product page)
  • 30cm height off crossbar (product page)
  • Allow at least 23.2kg empty · 75kg box luggage limit

Why consider it

  • Published 30cm height off crossbar
  • Dual-side opening and PowerClick mounting

Keep in mind

  • Long, wide shell
  • Manual interior is lower than the product-page figure
A compact shell for occasional trips

VonHaus 320L car roof box

A shorter 320-litre hard box with an 11.5kg empty weight and single-side opening. It suits a modest luggage load if its mounting hardware matches the bars; shorter dimensions do not prove it fits a particular car.

Best suited to occasional use with compact luggage. Confirm the mounting hardware and bar-spacing requirements with VonHaus before ordering, and account for the one-sided loading access.

  • 320 litres
  • 132 × 78 × 35cm
  • 11.5kg empty / 55kg box payload limit

Why consider it

  • Shorter shell for compact luggage
  • Lighter than the large Motion 3 XL

Keep in mind

  • Single-side opening
  • No model-specific hatch-clearance figure on the product page
Narrow, single-side alternative

Thule Ocean 600 — gloss black

A long, narrow single-side-opening alternative with a 63cm-wide shell and Easy-Snap fittings. Plan with 14kg empty and a 50kg box luggage limit.

For narrow luggage when single-side access works. This is a legacy range: verify the supplied model label, exact hardware, support and current offer before buying.

  • 330 litres · 190 × 63 × 37cm (selected UK listing/range)
  • 14kg empty · 50kg box luggage limit (Ocean manual)
  • Single-side opening · Easy-Snap mounting

Why consider it

  • 63cm-wide long shell
  • Lower empty weight than a large Motion XL

Keep in mind

  • Single-side access
  • Legacy documentation contains differing volume and weight figures

Choose around the height you actually need to reduce

The Motion 3 XL Low is the purpose-designed low-profile option here. Thule publishes a 30cm height off the crossbar for this exact model. The VonHaus 320L and Ocean 600 offer lower shell-height alternatives for different luggage shapes, but their exterior heights are not directly equivalent to that off-bar measurement.

A low roof box is worthwhile when it carries your actual load while reducing the fitted height compared with another suitable setup. It is not automatically lighter, quieter or able to enter a particular garage. We do not claim a measured aerodynamic or fuel-use advantage from a product's shape alone.

This shortlist distinguishes a long, wide low-profile box from a compact short box and an older long narrow option. It does not label every shallow-looking box as interchangeable. Start with the luggage and the measurement that is causing the problem.

Shell height and height off the bar are different figures

An external shell dimension measures the product itself. Height off the crossbar describes the fitted box's rise above its supporting bar using the manufacturer's method. Recessed bases can make these measurements different, and the foot/rack installation adds another layer of height above the car roof.

For the Motion XL Low, the product page gives a 36cm external height and 30cm height off the crossbar. Do not add both to the car height. Equally, do not subtract its external height from another model and assume the same difference will appear above your garage floor.

If comparing alternatives, ask for the same reference measurement for each. Where it is unavailable, measure the permitted assembled setup or request the manufacturer's fit drawing. A seller's “low profile” description is not a dimension.

Check the Motion XL Low interior before choosing it for luggage

The XL Low is marketed at 400L, compared with the standard Motion XL's 490L. They use different vertical space: the low model is suited to lower luggage arrangements rather than simply being the standard box positioned closer to the car.

Thule's XL Low product page gives an interior of 203 × 74 × 30cm. Its linked fitting manual gives 202.4 × 73.6 × 27.6cm. Use the smaller relevant manual dimensions for preliminary checks, then confirm the actual unit. A rigid bag that is exactly 30cm tall is not a comfortable fit just because it matches the page's maximum interior height.

The exterior also differs slightly between the page and manual: 216 × 89 × 36cm versus 215.5 × 89 × 34.9cm. These are reasons to use the correct drawing and a fitted measurement, especially when clearance is close. They are not spare centimetres to assume you can recover.

Compare low luggage with short or narrow alternatives

The VonHaus 320L has a published 35cm external shell height and much shorter 132cm length. Its interior suits compact bags more readily than long sports equipment. Check its mounting instructions with VonHaus before buying; a short, low shell does not establish an approved bar fit.

The Ocean 600 has a published 190 × 63 × 37cm external shape for the selected UK range, with single-side access. It may suit a long narrow load, but its fitted height needs confirmation. The older manufacturer documents also contain conflicting volume/weight figures, so match the actual supplied model and plan with the Ocean manual's 14kg empty weight.

For all three, compare the largest packed item with both the interior and the loading opening. A hard suitcase may be the wrong shape for a low box even if its volume seems modest. Soft luggage can be more adaptable, provided it stays clear of closing mechanisms and is properly restrained.

Measure total fitted height on the actual car

Use the vehicle, rack and box in their permitted positions, on a suitable level surface. Identify the highest point of the complete setup and measure its height from the ground with help where needed. Do not climb on a tyre or body panel to take a measurement.

Record the fitted height where the driver can check it before entering a restricted space. Compare it with the actual posted limit and the route into that space. Sloping entrances, changing gradients, open doors and barriers can make a simple visual estimate unreliable. A small theoretical margin is a reason to seek a different parking option or further confirmation.

A garage-height problem may also be solved by removing the box before entering, if a safe and practical removal space exists. Include that handling process in the buying decision. Do not alter approved feet, clamp positions or bar spacing to lower the equipment.

Remember hatch movement and lid opening

A low box can still be too long for the rear hatch. For the Motion XL Low, the front-clearance measurement on Thule's page is greater than 1,324mm, using its specified front-bar-to-hatch method. The number is model-specific and does not replace checking the actual hatch movement on the installed arrangement.

Check the space needed above and beside the box when its lid is open, not just its closed profile. If loading takes place under a carport, the lid or your lifting path may need more space than the driving configuration. Opening direction matters when a wall or another carrier is close alongside.

Our opening-systems comparison explains those access decisions. A low external profile should not leave you with a box you cannot conveniently load where you normally park.

A lower box can still consume substantial roof allowance

The Motion XL Low page lists 23kg empty; its linked manual gives 23.2kg. Allow at least 23.2kg for planning. Low profile is a shape description, not a lightweight claim.

On an illustrative 75kg roof allowance with a 5kg complete rack, that leaves 46.8kg under the vehicle calculation before other equipment and lower rack/box limits. A lighter short box could leave more allowance, but it must also carry the required bag shape. Compare lighter boxes when weight is the limiting factor.

Ask whether a shallower box would force you to move dense luggage into an unsuitable place in the car. Vehicle payload and secure cabin/boot storage remain separate checks. The aim is a workable full load, not just a lower outline on the roof.

Quantify what the lower XL shape gives up

The standard Motion XL and XL Low have the same planning empty mass but different vertical space. That makes them a useful comparison for separating lower shape from lighter weight.

Inputs and assumptions. Compare 639800 XL and 639400 XL Low using the same family-manual rows. Manual exterior heights are 42.8cm and 34.9cm; maximum interior heights 35cm and 27.6cm; planning masses both 23.2kg. The 32cm bag is an illustrative packed height, not a model-fit claim.

The manual shell-height reduction is 7.9cm, while the maximum interior-height reduction is 7.4cm. Neither is a measured reduction in your complete car’s height: the roof, rack and box references must match.

A bag can fail the Low model’s height screen while the lower shell still weighs as much as the standard XL. Decide whether lower luggage shapes solve your actual packing task; do not expect a low-profile label to recover roof-load allowance.

Calculation method and sources

Subtract Low from standard for the height and marketed-volume changes. Check bag height against the smaller manual maximum before considering the opening, lid taper, mounts or restraints. Equal empty masses produce equal weight allowances for otherwise identical inputs.

  • Motion 3 family instructions: PDF pages 14–15: exact Sport, XL and XL Low rows; maximum dimensions do not describe the whole packing envelope.
  • Motion 3 XL Low 639400: 400L marketed capacity; fitted vehicle height remains a separate measurement.
  • Motion 3 XL 639800: Standard-height XL; 200cm ski maximum. Planning mass is 23.2kg from the manual.

Make a height and packing checklist before ordering

  • Record the maximum fitted height you can accommodate and how it was established.
  • Compare like-for-like off-bar measurements where available.
  • Trial the bag height and layout against the smaller relevant interior figures.
  • Check hatch movement, lid access and the installation instructions.
  • Calculate empty equipment and luggage weight separately.
  • Plan storage and removal for journeys where parking restrictions change.

Specifications checked October 2026 against the Motion XL Low page, Motion manual, VonHaus specification and Ocean instructions. The final clearance depends on the complete installed setup, not a catalogue category.

Frequently asked questions

What does low profile mean for a roof box?

It generally describes a shallower shape, but it is not a standard clearance guarantee. Compare the actual exterior dimensions and, where available, the manufacturer’s height-off-crossbar measurement.

Will Motion 3 XL Low fit under a two-metre barrier?

The box alone cannot answer that. Measure the highest point of your actual car, approved rack and installed box, then check the barrier and approach. Thule’s published 30cm off-bar figure is not a two-metre fit promise.

Does a low-profile box hold less luggage?

It can lose useful vertical space. The XL Low is marketed at 400L and the standard Motion XL at 490L; bag shape and the smaller relevant internal dimensions still decide what fits.

Is a low-profile box lighter?

Not necessarily. Allow at least 23.2kg for the named Motion XL Low, using its linked manual. Compare empty weights separately from external height.

Can I lower the roof bars to gain clearance?

Only use positions and components approved for the exact vehicle and rack. Do not modify feet, pads or clamps to reduce height. If the approved setup is too tall, choose another arrangement or parking option.
